2024 Edge VS 2023 Sorento

2024 Edge

SUVs are perennially among the most popular vehicles in America, and Edge has the attributes to deliver the combination of comfort and functionality that owners demand. With five models, including a performance-oriented Edge ST and styling enhancements in the ST-Line model, the 2024 Edge offers a match for almost any potential buyer. Let's look at how Edge handles competitors in this thriving segment.

Higher Torque at Lower RPM

Bottom Line:
Comparing standard engines, Edge livens up the fun-to-drive factor with a 2.0LEcoBoost I-4 engine with a twin-scroll turbo charger designed to spool up the power increase when the driver needs it — such as when pulling into traffic. The 2.0L EcoBoost engine generates more power than the Kia 2.5L I-4 engine and reaches peak torque at just 3,000 rpm.

Worth Noting:
All Edge models come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). It's an optional feature on Sorento models, excluding the range-topping SX Prestige.

  Edge 2.0LEcoBoost I-4 +/- Sorento 2.5L I-4
Horsepower 250 @ 5,500 rpm +59 191 @ 6,100 rpm
Torque (lb.-ft.) 275 @ 3,000 rpm +94 181 @ 4,000 rpm
All-wheel drive(AWD) Standard   Available

The Performance Edge

Bottom Line:
The Edge ST model was the first SUV developed by the Ford Performance Team — and they made it impressively quick and agile. Thanks to the 2.7LEcoBoost V6turbocharged engine, Edge ST offers great power in an SUV.

Worth Noting:
Sorento drivers can move up to an available 2.5L I-4 turbocharged engine in the EX model (and above), which has a higher-revving engine than Edge ST. But ST provides more horsepower and loads more torque.

  Edge ST 2.7LEcoBoost V6 +/- Sorento 2.5L I-4Turbocharged
Horsepower 335 @ 5,500 rpm +54 281 @ 5,800 rpm
Torque (lb.-ft.) 380 @ 3,250 rpm +69 311 @ 1,700-4,000rpm
All-wheel drive(AWD) Standard   Available

State-of-the-Art Tech

Bottom Line:
Every Edge model comes standard with SYNC4A — the most advanced version of SYNC ever. SYNC 4Aincludes a 12" color LCD touch screen with cloud-based connectivity, Ford Power-Up software updates and more conversational voice recognition than the previous version. SYNC 4A is intuitive and provides adaptive one-touch Dash Cards for frequently used apps.

Worth Noting:
Sorento's standard infotainment system includes an 8" display on the LX trim level. New for 2023, the 10.25" touchscreen with navigation is included on the S trim series and above. Kia does not offer software updates.

Assistance Granted

Bottom Line:
Edge, with it standard FordCo-Pilot360 driver-assist technology, offers another benefit. Sorento has a variety of Kia Drive Wise driver-assist technologies, but features get added as prospects move up the trim levels; Edge makes them standard. Specifically, Rear Parking Sensors and Post-Collision Braking are standard on Edge models. On Sorento, similar technology is only available in upgrades.

Worth Noting:
Edge offers available driver-assist features that Kia does not have, such as Enhanced Active Park Assist and Evasive Steering Assist. Available in the Titanium Elite Package, Enhanced Active Park Assist steers itself into a parallel or perpendicular parking spot with help from the added Front and Side Parking Sensors.

Utility Space

Bottom Line:
A major difference between Edge and this competitor is the way each uses the interior volume. Edge has two rows of seats for five passengers, plus a generous cargo area behind the rear seat. Sorento has a standard third row to seat two additional passengers(seven total). Key Edge features to demonstrate its utility include the standard Cargo Management System, tie-down hooks and LED lighting in the rear cargo area, plus the second-row Easy Fold seat release (SEL and above) that folds flat with one hand motion.

Worth Noting:
Ask potential buyers to try out that third-row seat in Sorento. How's the leg room? It's 29.6" to be exact.

  Edge +/- Sorento
Behind 1st row(cu. ft.) 73.4 +2.1 75.5
Rear cargo spacewith all seats in(cu. ft.) 39.2 +26.6 12.6

  Point Counterpoint
Sorento offers an X-Line Appearance Package with its SX Prestige trim level with an outdoor theme, adding enhance dall-wheel drive (AWD), a bridge-type roof rack and increased ride height.

It's true — the AWD systems are not equal, because the enhanced Kia system with X-Line adds an AWD Snow Mode for slippery conditions.

However, the Edge Intelligent AWD System, which is not part of a package and comes standard on all models, is engineered to monitor road conditions and send the optimal amount of front and rear torque to the wheels to help maintain traction, including on slippery surfaces.

The Edge system also includes AWD Disconnect, which helps the driver to disconnect the rear driveline to reduce fuel consumption and drag. The AWD system automatically reconnects when it's needed.

Those looking for more off -road confidence can order the SEL Sport Appearance Package, which includes all-terrain tires designed to enhance grip, along with interior and exterior appearance upgrades.
